Bliquo For Android

Bliquo is relatively new app in the mobile world and it is available for the Android as well as the iPhone. This is a location aware app which uses your GPS data to give you a list of places around. By places I mean places where might want to go like restaurants, night clubs, bars, etc. And it does so very well.


Bliquo is somewhat like the fantastic personal assistant app Siri in that it gives you the locations that within your area. But Bliquo does only this and it does not have voice activation. But it still does it quite well. It has separate categories through which you can browse and decide what you want.


Reviewers report that the browsing experience is quite snappy and does not lag at all. Even when you are changing categories, it does not take time to fill up the page with relevant entries. So your browsing experience is quite good. It’s database is quite good and it reportedly turns up hundreds of entries in each category when the location permits it. Of course, if you are in the middle of nowhere, you might not get any entry at all simply because there’s nothing there or that the local diner is not documented.


Once you choose something, you will be offered more detail including a street address and phone number. So you can plot your course using Google Maps whilst you call them up for reservation. There are some restaurants that the app can book for you because there’s a tie up between the establishment and the makers of the App but you can expect the number to be quite low for the time being. It might go up.

Web Runtimes

The final MoMo London presentation I am going to post about is that by David Pollington of Vodafone R&D on web runtimes. David explained how a Javascript based runtime can be used to host mobile applications and services. The advantages are lower barriers to entry, reduced development time, decoupled application development and dynamic update.

David described the concept of an enhanced runtime that would allow access to phone features such as files, PIM, messaging, call handling, system data and the camera. Vodafone call this MobileScript.

The presentation continued with a comparison of web runtimes with other development methods…


The slide shows web page widgets having a greater reach than Java ME and native APIs. I found this a bit misleading. Very few phones are currently able to run (Javascript) widgets. Maybe the it shows the potential for widgets in the future? Then again, in an ideal or future world Java and Symbian might have a greater reach.

Vodafone are championing the idea of a standards based web runtime extension to allow access to phone features. In fact, just after MoMo, the there was a post on the W3C Mobile Web Initiative Team Blog about this. Let’s hope this happens. However, I am slightly sceptical that all the necessary parties can get together to solve this problem. I am also sceptical that this will be done (as opposed to ‘can be done’) in such a way that resulting applications and services don’t have to be re-written for specific devices. For example, the existing Nokia S60 widget support is currently a proprietary solution involving a S60 specific application install.

MoMo London July: Entertainment Applications

The theme for yesterday evening’s Mobile Monday London was ‘Mobile Entertainment Applications’. It turned out to be less about entertainment applications and more about applications in general, widgets and the perennial web vs app argument.

First of all, Patrick Mork from GetJar gave us some interesting statistics on GetJar…

1.2 million downloads per day
75% of users are under 25 yrs old
Email and Instant messaging are the most popular categories, followed by maps (presumably Google Maps) and Opera Mini
70% of downloads are Java ME.
The top growing category for popularity is Games
GetJar doesn’t have an on-device app to discover applications but is working on this

Patrick played on the fact that 70% of downloads are still Java ME. However, I’d say that this isn’t surprising given that GetJar only had Java apps in its initial years and after all, it is called GetJar and not GetSIS, GetCab or GetApp.

Interestingly, GetJar now has a shortcut mechanism called a Web App, that’s a small application that just launches a given web site in the mobile web browser. The argument is that this aids discoverability and that users don’t really care or sometimes even know if they end up using an application or web site.

A panel session followed with Patrick Mork from GetJar, Andreas Constantinou from Vision Mobile, Joachim Hoffman from Fjord, Mark Curtis from Flirtomatic and Daniel Appelquist from Vodafone.

Dan revealed that Vodafone will soon be providing the capability to sell widgets and also to sell within widgets. Despite the fact they will be widgets, they will be marketed to consumers as applications. Now that was two instances in one evening where I had heard of non-applications masquerading as applications!

There followed a discussion on whether the future would be apps, widgets or the web browser. This tied in well with Google’s Vic Gundotra recent comment that browsers are the Future.

A few years ago we were told that widgets or the web would solve application fragmentation problems. At the time, I commented that the majority of applications I create need facilities that will never be available from a web runtime. Furthermore, even if these facilities were available (incidentally, 3 years on they still aren’t), exposing them would expose differences in the underlying capabilities that themselves would cause fragmentation.

I have commented on inherant fragmentation within frameworks and backward compatibility of widgets. Three years on and a Vodafone Widget isn’t compatible (not packaged the same, different phone APIs and not interchangeable across app stores) with a S60 DevKit widget and Samsung have very recently released yet another widget format.

However, we can hope that the state of widgets will improve with major players’ (including Vodafone’s) participation in W3C and OMTP BONDI (API) widget standardisation. The big question is whether the existing widget runtimes will migrate to a common format and API.

However widgets and browsers evolve, I still believe there will always be applications, widgets and the web, all used according to their respective strengths and capabilities.

Jump Nintendo 3DS hijacked

Just a few hours after its release in Japan, Nintendo's brand-new portable gaming console directly 3DS burglarized hackers.

Last Saturday, thousands of Japanese game lovers queuing at some stores to get 3DS, which carries a three-dimensional without glasses. Not long after 3DS sold, the hackers managed to find the weakness of the console.

a group who called themselves R4i upload a video on YouTube which shows a number of hackers play pirated games in 3DS, using flash memory cartridge from a third party.

Kubu hackers claim, they managed to modify the whitelist in 3DS making it possible to use the machine's memory card R4. They claim, the user can do this by hijacking 3DS device directly.

Sales of Nintendo 3DS recorded very satisfactory, reaching 400,000 units in its first day. Nintendo 3DS own price $ 100 more expensive than the old Nintendo DS console at launch.

Nintendo's new 3DS be penetrated Europe, 25 March. However, following this incident, the Japanese gaming giant that could be set back the release date in order to fix the problem.

Super Mario 3D Will Present at Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo announced that they will bring the game Super Mario Nintendo 3DS 3D for this year.

"A 3D game of the series Super Mario game is in progress to be presented in a portable system Nintendo 3DS," said Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, at the Games Developers Conference event in San Francisco.

"Super Mario 3D Game will bring the traditional features of Mario games and many new additions, which will make the imagination of Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of Mario games) become a reality,"said the Nintendo.

Super Mario 3D is being developed by the team that created the Nintendo game Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 could be present for the Wii console.

Nintendo 3DS device itself is expected to be released in the U.S. and UK in March. Nintendo Party said that if consumers had to wait more to hear the development of 3D Super Mario game.

Motorola buys stake Mobility Mobile Game Developer

Motorola Mobility announced it has invested in HTML5-based game developer for mobile devices and social networking, Moblyng.

Moblyng has shown a number of games for the Android platform, IOS, WebOS and world number one social network, Facebook. Not only that, Moblyng also been downloaded up to nine million times.

"Mobility Motorola Ventures seeking new companies the most innovative and promising to invest, and we found a strong synergy between our vision for the future of mobile technology and the strategic direction of Moblyng," said managing director of Motorola Ventures Mobility, Harshul Sanghi,

"Moblyng is one of the first party to adopt Android and is the industry leader in the use of the HTML5 to provide cross-platform experience of social gaming to mobile devices. We can not wait to see the realization of their vision," adds Sanghi.

Meanwhile, chief executive officer and inventor of Moblyng, Stewart Putney, stated, "As one of the initial Android developers, Moblyng very excited to be working with Motorola Mobility, a leader provider Android smartphones and tablets."

"We hope to work together to provide an enjoyable gaming a social experience into the Motorola Mobility," said Putney.

Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio, said that the popular game Angry Birds will be present in up months ahead.
